What is the Currency of Afghanistan?
The currency of Afghanistan is the Afghan afghani, also known as AFN. Deriving its name form the country of Afghanistan itself, the afghani has been around since 1925 when it replaced the Afghan Rupee. However, the modern afghani is not the same as the original. Afghanistan has had an incredibly tumultuous history, including a Soviet invasion in 1979, a civil war in 1992, and an invasion by the United States in 2001. Each of these events caused instability of the currency in various forms and has led to redenomination or cancellation of outstanding notes. The most recent takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 leaves the fate of the currency uncertain.
